Oaxaca (pronounced wa-HA-ka in English) is in the southern part of Mexico about five hours from Mexico City. The city of Oaxaca is also the capital of the state of Oaxaca. Oaxaca is the historic home of the Zapotec and Mixtec Cities in Oaxacapeoples. The language in Oaxaca Mexico is made up from over 14 different languages and 90 dialects. Mexican travelers are often amazed that Spanish is not the primary language in Oaxaca. Mexico's most famous leader, President Benito Juárez, came from the Oaxacan village of San Pablo Guelatao. Benito Juarez was the first indigenous president of Mexico. The city of Oaxaca is one of Mexico's most beautiful colonial cities that is rich in histoy and culture. The historic downtown area offers many good examples of baroque colonial architecture dating from the 16th century. In Oaxaca you will find Mexico's most splendid churches, some of its finest museums, and dozens of well preserved municipal and religious buildings from the colonial era. In 1987 UNESCO declared the city as well as Monte Alban a world heritage site.
